Travel Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to participate in the program?

Tulane graduate students and non-Tulane graduate level students.  Please see the “How to Apply” section on our main page for further details. Non-Tulane students will need to apply to Tulane as non-degree students through the Payson Center if they would like to earn academic credit for the courses.  You must check with your institution to see if you can apply transfer credits to your degree.  Non-degree students may only take up to twelve (12) credit hours at Tulane.

I am currently applying to the MS or PhD program through the Payson Center at Tulane.  May I participate in the Summer Institute programs and apply them toward my degree?

If you intend to join our graduate academic program at the Payson Center, please refrain from taking any courses in the Summer Institute until you have been accepted into the program.  Once you are accepted into the program, any summer courses you attend will apply toward your degree.  Unfortunately, if you participate in our Summer Institute prior to being accepted into our MS/PhD program, credits will NOT be applied as credits earned toward a graduate degree available through the Payson Center at Tulane University.

How do I get financial aid?

Please contact your financial aid officer for information on eligibility and specifics on financial aid programs.  There are no scholarships or tuition waivers available for the Payson Summer Institute.  You may apply for financial aid in the form of loans through your department.  If the student does not subsequently complete hours initially registered, said student may be liable for the immediate repayment of loan funds to the lender.

Be aware of the disbursement timing and requirements to keep summer aid.  In some cases, schools or lenders may not disburse loan proceeds until the start of the program you are attending.  Because of the early start dates for some of our summer programs abroad, the relatively late dates on which the processing can begin, and the length of time it takes to process aid itself, it is likely that your loan proceeds may be unavailable to you in time for your departure.  It is important, therefore, that you have some other source of funds to ‘tide you over’ until the loan proceeds become available to you.  It is also very important that you make arrangements for someone to pay your bills at home while you are abroad so that your credit history is not blemished as a result of your absence.

Even if you are receiving financial aid, finance charges will be incurred if payment is not received by the payment deadline. The Accounts Receivable Office of Tulane University finalizes billing and will assess finance charges for registrants with unpaid balances after payment deadlines have passed.

If you have any further questions related to financial aid, please get in touch with your financial aid officer.

Do I need a visa?

Country visa requirements vary significantly.  Depending on the student's citizenship or permanent residency status, he or she may need to secure a visa.  This should be done well in advance of projected travel.  The Payson Center is glad to share what information it has about these requirements and to provide required documentation, as necessary.  However, students should keep in mind that it is ultimately their responsibility to understand the visa requirements that apply to them and to obtain the visa in a timely fashion.

What do I do if I cannot pay my tuition by the tuition deadline?

Please contact Accounts Receivable, (504) 865-5368, for any information regarding tuition deadlines, or late payments, as late fees are assessed directly by their office, and not by the Payson Center. Failure to pay on time will result in late fees being assessed but will not result in your being dropped from the program. No credit for participation in the program(s) will be granted if any participant fails to pay all tuition and housing expenses in full.
